London-based art and design collective rAndom International was founded in 2002 by Stuart Wood, Flo Ortkrass and Hannes Koch with a vision to create engaging and experimental art and design projects. Together, the trio’s experience includes working at artist studios such as Olafur Eliasson, Philips Design and the BBC research laboratories, however in 2005 rAndom decided to set up their own permanent studio space in London.

Working from the fringes of innovation in science, art and design, rAndom International have developed a series of increasingly artistic projects and installations that aim to re-interpret the ‘cold’ nature of digital-based work by providing the viewer with the opportunity to have a more hands-on experience with technology. Their work emphasizes a strong focus on the ephemeral quality of information, harbours an intense curiosity towards experimental processes, and includes a body of diverse installations, commissioned works and performance projects. More recently, their work has investigated the potential of adding behavioural qualities to usually in-animate objects and environments. Their evolving relationship with Wayne McGregor’s Random Dance led rAndom to be designing the scenography for their production of Entity II in 2010.

Awarded with an honourable mention at the Prix Ars Electronica in 2009 for their Audience Installation, April 2009 saw rAndom International launching “Mirrors”, their first permanent installation in London. In 2008 rAndom’s work was included in the “Design And The Elastic Mind” exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and accessioned into the permanent collection of the MoMA. In November 2007, The Observer recognised rAndom as one of the top ten of creative talents in UK Art and Design. Their projects have won prestigious design awards such as the iF Design Award 2005 and 2006, the Wallpaper* Design Award 2006, and the Creative Futures Award 2005. Collectively, the members of rAndom teach at Ravensbourne College of Communication, and have been regularly teaching at Platform 8 of the Royal College of Art’s Design Products Department since 2005.

Selected projects by rAndom International are editioned by the Christopher Henry Gallery in New York and by Carpenters Workshop Gallery in London. From December 2009, three installations by rAndom will be on show in the Decode exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
